Defensive Driving Course – Saturday 2nd May 2026

The Rotary Club of Crookwell is coordinating a Defensive Driver Course for P-Platers who live in the Upper Lachlan area. This course is funded by fundraising by Crookwell Rotary members and sponsorship by the Bendigo Bank.

The aim is to promote an awareness of factors that contribute to collisions on the road and to decrease vehicle running costs. A certificate will be issued at the completion of the course.

What is defensive and effective driving about?

The Sutton Road Training Centre facilitates the Defensive Driving Course. This course is designed to equip drivers with the skills and knowledge to navigate the myriad challenges and hazards present on public roads today. In an era where simply being defensive isn’t enough, this course empowers drivers to actively identify and mitigate risks, reducing the likelihood of collisions. Subjects covered include:

  • Hazard Recognition
  • Driver Awareness
  • Fuel Efficient Driving
  • Driver Fatigue
  • Vehicle Control
  • Road Law Knowledge
  • Minimising Driver Stress

Who can participate and what will it cost?

All applicants must hold a current NSW Probationary Licence and will be required to produce the licence on the day. Sorry Learner Drivers cannot be accepted onto the course.

The course is open to both Red P-Platers and Green P-Platers.

The course is FREE however a $100 deposit is required to secure your position. Note: The $100 deposit will be refunded to the individual on completion of the course, failure to attend will cause the $100 to be forfeited.

A complete application form along with the $100 deposit will secure your place in the course.

What do I need to be ready for the course?

Apply. Complete the attached form, which provides organisers with essential details for participants and an acknowledgement of the deposit requirements.

Also provide details to Sutton Road Training Centre. Approved participants will also be asked to provide details to the SRTC to meet their own administrative and insurance requirements. This is a separate process from this application process.

Suitable clothing. Applicants are to wear neat casual attire with closed in footwear (thongs and bare feet are not acceptable for safety reasons).

A vehicle. Vehicles are not provided for this course, so participants must bring their own vehicle. It is recommended that students train in their own vehicle to be able to fully appreciate the techniques and awareness being taught in a familiar vehicle.

Parents. Parents / Guardians are more than welcome to come and watch on the day.

What can I expect on the day?

With the support of the Sutton Road Training Centre (SRTC) based in Majura, the seven hour course will be run on Saturday, 2nd May, 2026.

The program is of 7 hours duration. Approximately three hours will be spent on theory plus demonstration followed by four hours practical tuition in your vehicle. The program participants will be accompanied in each vehicle with an accredited instructor. The major benefit of the course is that it has a strong practical element that emulates the ‘real world’ in a safe environment.

A BBQ lunch will be provided by Rotary Club of Crookwell. Tea, cofee and kitchen facilities are available at the centre. Participants are to bring their own snacks and any other drinks (non-alcoholic!) they wish to have during the course activities.

Location. Sutton Road Training Centre, 441 Sutton Road MAJURA ACT 2609….check Google maps for the best way to go. Please note the travel distance is approx. 120km with a travel time of around 1hr 30 mins….
