NAIDOC Week celebrations took place throughout the Upper Lachlan Shire

National NAIDOC Week celebrations took place throughout the Upper Lachlan Shire Libraries during the July school holidays. Each year, NAIDOC Week honours and recognises the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In the Upper Lachlan Shire libraries, NAIDOC Week offered school children aged 5 years and older the chance to participate in various activities. Among these were Basket Weaving Workshops led by local Aboriginal artist and proud Wiradjuri woman Jodie Munday. Attendees learned to weave with natural fibres, creating their mini baskets to take home while also gaining insights into cultural connections to land and water.

Two sessions of NAIDOC art activities were also held with Snake painting, where participants decorated a flexible wooden snake with Indigenous designs, and NAIDOC Week Dot Painting, which focused on using dots and lines to express essential concepts in Aboriginal culture.

Upper Lachlan Shire Council libraries extend their gratitude to Jodie Munday for her contributions to the Basket Weaving Workshops. All events were well-attended, and the positive feedback from participants showcased a wonderful celebration of the history and culture central to NAIDOC Week.
