Council was successful in gaining a $1.98 million grant from the Australian and NSW Governments for Road Safety Upgrades to seal 8.5km of Wombeyan Caves road, shoulder/road widening and installation of 250m guardrails on various sections of the road.
The funding also covers pedestrian safety improvements in Crookwell and Gunning with $196,000 for the installation of footpath and kerb ramps on Goulburn Road connecting Lin Cooper Reserve to town and $140,000 for the installation of footpath and kerb ramps on Warrataw Street extending town connections to Barbour Park and Gunning Pool.
Road Safety funding is part of the NSW Governments commitment to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries due to road crashes by 2050. Wombeyan Caves Road is known for its challenging and dangerous conditions, including narrow width, unstable embankments, blind turns, sharp hairpins and steep sections.
Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldron says, “The funding to prevent road deaths and serious accidents on Womebyan caves Road, as well as our pedestrian pathways, is good news for our Shire.”
“Critical infrastructure upgrades save lives, we greatly appreciate the Australian and NSW Government for their support in making our roads safer and more resilient for our community.” Said Alex.
This recent round of Road Safety funding completes the last of the unsealed sections of Wombeyan Caves Road in the Upper Lachlan Shire.
