Upper Lachlan Shire Council is pleased to share a list of all nominees for 2026 Australia Day awards.

The official awards will be presented next Monday 26 January 2026 at Gunning, Barbour Park 8:00am – 10:00am and Crookwell Memorial Park from 12:00pm.

UPPER LACHLAN EVENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Crookwell Car Show Committee – Rollin Chrome Car Show
Now an annual event, Rollin’ Chrome draws hundreds—if not thousands—of visitors from both near and far, to the Upper Lachlan Shire, generating significant revenue for local businesses in the shire—including pubs, clubs, eateries, supermarkets, and gift shops.
Each year, the Car Show has grown—not only in the number of spectators, but also in the number of entrants. In 2025, $18,000 was distributed to various organisations throughout the Upper Lachlan Shire.

Crookwell Hospital Auxiliary – Crookwell Hospital Auxiliary Event of the Year 2025

The event raised vital funds for Crookwell Hospital and highlighted the town’s capacity to host meaningful, inclusive gatherings that unite the community for a shared cause.

It reinforced the Auxiliary’s mission to enhance well-being through compassion and action.

The event was a shining example of what a community can achieve when it comes together.

Crookwell High School and Terry Campese Foundation – Terry Campese Foundation – Youth Mentor Program in Tonga – Crookwell Group

The program delivered tangible, lasting impact by constructing a library and computer hub—the first of its kind in a Tongan school—building a basketball court and renovating GMS.
Mu’a School. Through meaningful cross-cultural service, it strengthened both the local Tongan community and the participating Upper Lachlan Shire residents.

Young people in Upper Lachlan Shire gained invaluable experience in teamwork, leadership, and community service. Over 20 weeks of volunteering and fundraising prior to the trip, they developed empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of civic responsibility—qualities that will shape them as future community leaders.

The project united participants, mentors, local businesses, and community groups in Crookwell. Local residents supported fundraising initiatives such as BBQs, raffles, and community events, exemplifying the strength of regional cooperation and community spirit.

Quick Shear Inc – Shearers Showdown 2025

Shearers Showdown, hosted by Quick Shear Inc, successfully raised vital funds for the Dalton community and several not-for-profit community groups.

The event offered a fun, entertaining, and educational day out for families in the Upper Lachlan Shire and beyond. It focused on raising awareness for mental health, particularly in the shearing industry. In addition to this important cause, the event donated $8,920.00 to the Dalton community to help build a new park, $3,000.00 to Meals on Wheels, $3,000.00 to

CADS, and contributed to other non-profit mental health organisations. In total, $19,920.00 was raised for various community initiatives.

Laggan Revisited Committee – Laggan Revisited

The Laggan Revisited event ran in October for a weekend raising awareness of the history behind this wonderful part of the Upper Lachlan Shire. Laggan Revisited was a focus on Australian & local history on show for 3 days incorporating hundreds of people getting involved from all walks of life.

The event was a nod to the areas rich agricultural heritage, coming together to show-case historic vehicles, events, displays and facts brought forward to the present day for approximately 2500 visitors to be part of.

The event encouraged thousand of spectators to visit the Upper Lachlan Shire region with Laggan township at the hub, bringing huge enterprise and revenue to the area and it’s

many businesses. It facilitated a large turn over of trading for all aspects of the community. Especially in hospitality and tourism

Laggan and District Progress Association – 1st Annual Laggan Charity Ball

The 1st Annual Laggan Charity Ball was a resounding success, uniting the community for an enjoyable formal evening dedicated to raising funds for the Upper Lachlan Foundation and the Laggan and District Progress Association. With enquiries and bookings already underway for next year’s event—which will mark the 100th anniversary of Laggan Hall—the excitement continues to grow. Everyone involved benefited from this memorable occasion, whether by attending, making generous donations as individuals or businesses, or volunteering their time and energy in countless ways. These combined efforts will have a lasting and positive impact on the wider community.

UPPER LACHLAN CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD

Louise Gibbs – Crookwell

Louise embodies the spirit of active citizenship—quietly, consistently, and with a generous heart. As the AP&H Society Grounds Coordinator for the Crookwell Showground, she manages bookings for upcoming events, oversees daily camping reservations, and ensures the amenities are clean and well-maintained.
She warmly welcomes visitors to our region and oversees the maintenance and upkeep of an extensive area—working closely with a dedicated team of volunteers. Louise is always there for others.
Whether tending to someone’s garden, helping with shopping or cleaning, or simply sharing a warm cup of tea and a friendly chat, she brings genuine care and heartfelt connection to those around her.

Melinda Medway – Gunning

Melinda Medway exemplifies community spirit and achievement. After moving to the district in 1983, she immediately immersed herself in local life, playing a key role in establishing the Gunning Preschool and actively participating in the Gunning P & C.

Melinda has led fundraising initiatives for men’s and women’s mental health, founding two of the district’s most impactful annual events: the ‘Ladies Gathering’ and the ‘Men’s Long

Lunch.’ These events have raised over $300,000 for vital health needs, such as generators, vaccine refrigerators, and essential medical equipment for the local practice.

Melinda also serves on the Gunning PA & I Society and is Chief of Catering. She not only provides meals for volunteers, spectators, and the public but also helps organize major fundraising events, such as the 2025 Endeavour Car Rally, where over 150 people were served breakfast and dinner, as well as team sorting competitions.

Cheryl John – Crookwell

Cheryl serves as the backbone of the Lions Club of Crookwell in her role as secretary. She takes on numerous responsibilities and has played a pivotal role in many community fundraising projects. As a skilled proofreader for the Upper Lachlan Gazette, Cheryl ensures clear and accurate communication. She is always attuned to the needs of Crookwell, stepping in wherever community support is needed.

Furthermore, the Crookwell branch of the CWA stands out as an exemplary organization. As Public Officer, Cheryl keeps the community well-informed about their activities and initiatives.

St Barts Anglican Church has also benefited from Cheryl’s dedicated service, both as the Facebook coordinator and as the principal organiser of the annual Christmas lunch.

Brian Bourke – Crookwell

Since moving to Crookwell four years ago, Brian has become a driving force in the community. He has served as treasurer of the Rotary Club throughout his time in Crookwell and is now stepping up as president, continuing his energetic commitment with a strong focus on fundraising initiatives.

In addition to his work with the Rotary Club, Brian volunteers for Meals on Wheels, where he also serves as president. He has helped support the organization by raising funds through Rotary wood raffles. Brian has also collaborated with the Crookwell Lions Club and CWA to raise money for the eye slit machine donated to Crookwell Hospital. His commitment to the community is further demonstrated by his willingness to take on even the smallest tasks, such as cleaning BBQ plates in local parks.

Brian’s dedication extends across a range of projects, including raising $5,000 for a safety fence for the Refresh Group at St Bart’s. His active involvement continues to make a significant impact on the community’s well-being.

Therese Skelly – Crookwell

Therese, as a local Primary School Teacher at St Mary’s Primary School, consistently demonstrates active citizenship and contributes to the enhancement of community life. Over more than 34 years of service as a primary school teacher, she has held senior positions including Religious Education Coordinator and, most recently, Vice Principal of St Mary’s Primary School.

Beyond her roles within the school, Therese regularly volunteers for Meals on Wheels deliveries and is an active parish member of the St Mary’s Catholic Church. Her sustained service, leadership roles, and commitment to volunteering exemplify her dedication to the community.

However, what truly distinguishes Therese are the qualities she exhibits in her daily life. Her ongoing displays of understanding, empathy, kindness, and nurturing set her apart from others in similar roles. These characteristics form the foundation of her positive impact on those around her and the broader community.

Robert Handley – Taralga

Robert is an outstanding member of the Taralga community, always willing to lend a helping hand no matter the event or organization. Whether it’s working bees or community events, Robert can be counted on for his skills with a tractor and truck.

As a committee member, Robert takes initiative to solve problems using his quiet knowledge and practical common sense. Having always lived in Taralga, his deep passion for the community shines through in everything he does. Robert strives to do his best and is often the first to step up and make things happen.

UPPER LACHLAN YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD

Peter Cosgrove

Peter is a kind-hearted and community-minded young man who consistently demonstrates active citizenship and a genuine commitment to helping others. He willingly volunteers his time to support a wide range of community events and causes, always with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. As a dedicated member of the 1st Gunning Scout Group, Peter has played an active role in numerous local initiatives, from running fundraising BBQs (his personal favourite!) to assisting at events such as the Gunning Christmas Markets, ANZAC Day ceremonies, and the Gunning Fireworks.

A natural role model, Peter is known for standing up for others, especially younger students, and offering a helping hand whenever it’s needed. His kindness and care for his many cousins further highlight his nurturing and dependable nature. His leadership and citizenship have also been recognised within his school community—winning the 2024 Senior Citizens Scholarship, serving as 2025 House Captain, and being elected a 2026 School Prefect.

Elisha Marcelino

Elisha has consistently demonstrated active citizenship through her strong sense of community pride and willingness to represent Crookwell locally and internationally. Over the past year, she represented Crookwell High School and the town of Crookwell in a six-month student exchange program in Hamburg, Germany, where she shared stories of rural Australian life and promoted cultural understanding. Elisha actively participated in school and community initiatives, including the Year 6 transition program, helping younger students feel supported as the begin high school. Through her involvement with STEM programs, debating, and Australian Business Week, she has shown leadership, teamwork, and a commitment to personal and community growth. Elisha also contributes to the local economy and community by working and babysitting for local families, further strengthening her connection to Crookwell and its people.

Naomi Cordova

Naomi has demonstrated exceptional active citizenship and commitment to enhancing community life through her involvement in both local and international service initiatives. As a participant in the 2025 Terry Campese Foundation (TCF) Youth Mentor Program, Naomi spent 20 weeks volunteering and supporting various Crookwell organisations, displaying

leadership, compassion, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Events and organisations Naomi volunteered her time with include visiting with View haven residents, cooking a BBQ at Crookwell High School, assisting in hosting a youth dance, and serving lunch to veterans on ANZAC Day. Her dedication extended beyond her local community when she travelled to Tonga in July, joining other TCF groups to help build a school library, computer hub, and sporting facilities—projects that will have a lasting impact on the lives of young people there.

Naomi’s commitment to service did not end with the program. She continues to volunteer her time with the Terry Campese Foundation and is currently participating in the Special Forces

Challenge—a demanding 30-hour physical and mental endurance event. Through this challenge, Naomi has already raised over $3000 to support the 2026 Youth Mentor Program, showing both perseverance and a strong sense of purpose in giving back to a cause that shaped her own growth.

Sophie Ward

Sophie has consistently demonstrated active citizenship and a strong commitment to enhancing both her school and wider community through leadership, service, and personal excellence. At school, Sophie is an engaged and dedicated student, contributing through a variety of roles and achievements. She has represented her school in soccer and cricket, demonstrating teamwork and school pride, and has supported important causes, such as Legacy, by selling badges.

Academically, she has earned multiple awards, including Academic Excellence in Years 7, 9, and 10, as well as the Junior Mathematics Award in 2024, reflecting her diligence and commitment to learning.

Sophie also contributes significantly to her peers’ well-being as a member of the Student Representative Council and as a Peer Support Leader, helping younger students feel welcome and supported. Her leadership qualities have been formally recognised through her election as Vice-Captain of Crookwell High School for 2026.

Lachlan Hearne

Despite his young age, Lachlan exemplifies outstanding community spirit. He has taken initiative through successful fundraising efforts, including a recent event at Gunning Public School to support a local family who lost their home in a fire.

Starting with a conversation with school Principal Ms Main, Lachlan’s idea blossomed into a large-scale fundraiser that brought together the Gunning Fish River RFS, SES, Police Rescue, Goulburn PCUC, local member the Hon. Wendy Tuckerman, and senior officers from the NSW Police Service.

Lachlan consistently demonstrates the highest community values and a strong work ethic, serving as a role model for others.

UPPER LACHLAN SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD

Ryan Seaman

As a long-standing community member, Ryan has consistently demonstrated his dedication to sports through a range of achievements and contributions. His involvement includes planning Junior Soccer, organizing events, coaching, and capturing memorable moments through photography.

Ryan has provided advice and support to residents seeking to improve their health within our Shire. Notably, he has represented Australia three times at the Functional Fitness Championships.

Beyond his many community activities, Ryan has organised and run a free community bootcamp for all Shire residents, making use of the upgraded pool facilities. He exemplifies community spirit through his volunteerism and unwavering passion for health and fitness, always striving to support others and capture the achievements of young athletes.

UPPER LACHLAN YOUNG SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD

Madeline Cosgrove

Madeline is a dedicated and enthusiastic athlete with a strong passion for sports, particularly Netball. She has represented Yass Rep Netball for two years (2022-2023) and is an active member of the Trinity Catholic College Goulburn School Representative teams. Despite her commitment to Netball, Madeline’s true passion lies with horses. She regularly competes at local shows in Australian Stock Horse and Sporting classes, consistently demonstrating her skills and love for equestrian events.

Inter-school competitions include representing Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn. Notable achievements are the Berry Interschools Fastest Time and Double Salem (High School) in 2023, as well as ACT Interschools Age Champion for Sporting in 2022.

In 2024, Madeline achieved the Fastest Time in Western Bending at the Berry Interschools and was named Reserve Champion in Sporting (High School). She was also Champion in C Grade Polocrosse at the North West Equestrian Coonabarabran event and Champion Sporting Year 9 at NWE C 2024.

Lyla Kohonen

Lyla Kohonen has been nominated as Young Sportsperson of the Year, representing Gunning Public School in Athletics and Cross Country at the regional level since Year 4 (ages 9–11).

She has also represented Yass High School in Athletics and Cross Country at the regional level since Year 7 (ages 12–15).

Additionally, Lyla represented the South Coast Region at State Cross Country in Year 7 (age 12) and again in Year 10 (age 15).

For the past two years, she has volunteered as an Athletics Carnival helper at primary school events across the Yass and Gunning Districts.

Lyla has played as a representative for Yass Netball since the Under-12s, participating in regional carnivals and State Titles in Sydney over the last four years.

She has also volunteered at the Gunning & District Senior Citizens Christmas Party for the past four years, serving drinks, assisting with meals, and providing comfort to attendees.

Lyla is actively involved with community groups such as the Oolong Fire Brigade, Gunning Fishing Club, and the Gunning & District Senior Citizens Christmas Party, where she helps with fundraisers and raffles.

Jack Frost

Jack is an exceptional athlete, representing NSW Hockey and South Coast teams across multiple sports, including rugby union, athletics, and cross-country.

He consistently demonstrates fairness and integrity, earning the admiration of teammates and coaches. Jack is proud to represent his school and community at every level, bringing recognition and reflecting his passion, dedication, and sportsmanship.

Jack’s exceptional achievements across multiple sports, combined with his exemplary character, leadership as a school prefect, and unwavering commitment, make him a truly deserving candidate for the Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. He embodies dedication, respect, and excellence and inspires others through his passion and positive contributions to school and community.

Will Heffernan

William is an outstanding young athlete whose dedication, leadership, and hockey prowess have driven him to achieve remarkable success at school, club, regional, and state levels. As a key member of the Crookwell High School Open Boys Hockey Team, William played a pivotal role in securing South Coast Championships from 2023 to 2025 and led his team to impressive 4th place finishes in the NSW State Championships in both 2024 and 2025.

As a talented goalkeeper, William represented the NSW Combined High Schools South Coast Team in 2025 and was selected for the ACT Under 18s State Team, competing at the National Championships in Perth. He also excelled indoors as a member of the 2025 ACT U16s Indoor State Team, where he was awarded Player of the Match against NSW Blue.

Beyond his impressive sporting résumé, William is recognized for his strong sense of teamwork, humility, and dedication to supporting younger players. He regularly assists with junior training sessions, serving as a mentor and positive role model for emerging goalkeepers. His exceptional work ethic, resilience, and commitment to continuous improvement distinguish him as both a leader and a lifelong learner.

Erik Skelly

Erik has enjoyed an exceptional year in cricket throughout 2025, showcasing not only remarkable sporting talent but also notable maturity, strong leadership, and steadfast dedication to his teams. His achievements across various levels of competition have firmly established him as a standout young athlete in our region.

As a key member of the Crookwell Pirates 2nd Grade team, Erik was instrumental in the side’s success during the 2024/2025 season, which culminated in a thrilling Grand Final victory. In the decisive match, Erik produced a standout bowling performance, claiming 3 wickets for just 16 runs from 6 overs—a testament to his skill and composure well beyond his years. His invaluable contribution was central to the team’s triumph and earned him widespread praise from both teammates and opponents.

Erik’s cricketing journey has continued to progress impressively. In 2025, he was selected for the South Coast Open Boys School Cricket Team, a clear acknowledgment of his talent and consistency. Although the carnival results were not available at the time of nomination, Erik’s inclusion in this representative team highlights the high esteem in which he is held by coaches and selectors alike.

Annie Knight

Annie Knight is an outstanding and dedicated young athlete whose passion for sport, exemplary leadership, and deep community involvement make her a truly deserving nominee for Young Sportsperson of the Year. Annie has represented the ACT across multiple age groups, consistently demonstrating her skill, determination, and sportsmanship at both state and national competitions, including her recent participation at the Under 18s Nationals in Perth. Her hockey career is marked by significant achievements; she has played pivotal roles for Crookwell High School, serving as both a valued team member and an inspiring captain. Annie’s leadership is highly respected by teammates and coaches, both on and off the field.

Annie’s contributions extend well beyond her own athletic accomplishments. She was instrumental in establishing the pioneering Crookwell girls’ league tag team, opening doors for female athletes in the local competition. Since its inception, Annie has been a central figure and passionate ambassador for the sport, actively encouraging and supporting the growth of women’s participation in the Crookwell region. Her commitment also encompasses officiating, as she generously volunteers her time as a referee for both junior and senior games, helping to ensure the continued success and vitality of local competitions.

Henry Arnall

Henry is an exceptional all-round athlete whose remarkable skill, determination, and leadership are evident across a wide array of sports. As a dedicated and versatile competitor, he consistently represents Crookwell High School with pride, sportsmanship, and unwavering commitment.

In 2025, Henry excelled in Soccer (Opens and Under 15s), Cricket, Touch Football, and Open Boys Hockey. Notably, his hockey team secured an impressive 4th place in the State for the second consecutive year—a testament to both his individual talent and his ability to contribute to a cohesive, high-performing team. His abilities were further acknowledged when he was invited to trial for the Southern Highlands Soccer Team, underscoring his growing reputation as one of the region’s most promising young athletes.

Henry exemplifies all the qualities of a true young sportsperson: talent, humility, perseverance, and a profound commitment to his teammates and community. His accomplishments across multiple sports, leadership both on and off the field, and sincere passion for supporting others make him an inspiring role model and a truly deserving nominee for the Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. With his drive, character, and potential, Henry’s sporting future is undeniably bright.

Hannah Calleja

Hannah Calleja has achieved outstanding results across a diverse range of sports over many years. She consistently demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship, often competing in older age groups—such as soccer and athletics—where she continues to excel due to her advanced skill level.

Beyond her sporting achievements, Hannah is renowned for her unwavering commitment in both team and individual training sessions. She regularly undertakes early starts, late nights, and significant travel, always giving her full effort. As a wonderful role model to her peers and an outstanding member of the community, Hannah inspires those around her with her dedication, perseverance, and exemplary work ethic.
