The National General Assembly (NGA) is the largest annual gathering of local government leaders in Australia, where councils from across the country come together to discuss key local government issues and propose motions for national consideration. The theme of the 2025 conference was “National Priorities Need Local Solutions.” The event featured world-class speakers who discussed the current political and economic climate and its implications for local councils. It also provided a platform for attendees to raise various issues and contribute to national solutions.
CEO Alex Waldron and Deputy Mayor Rob Camron took full advantage of the opportunity by attending the Regional Forum also held in Canberra on Tuesday 24 June 2025. The forum focused on discussing the various priorities and challenges that rural and regional Councils face compared to city Councils. Key topics included road maintenance and financial sustainability, as regional councils often have a smaller rate base and a larger area to manage. The lengthy forum also heard calls for the Federal Government to adjust funding levels and formulas to better support regional councils and their communities.
While On Friday, there was an opportunity to engage with both new and returning Federal Ministers on significant community issues through the Ministerial Engagement Forum, hosted by ABC journalist David Speers. During this forum, discussions centered on how the returning federal government plans to collaborate with various government bodies over the next three years.
Over 1,200 delegates attended from councils across the nation. Notable speakers throughout the four days included the Hon. Kristy McBain, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms. Sam Mostyn, Mark Bouris AM, and many other accomplished individuals.
CEO Alex Waldron stated, “It was a wonderful opportunity that allowed both Deputy Mayor Rob Cameron and I to connect, share ideas, learn, and advocate for local issues in our community.” She added, “While we are a small council, the NGA provides an essential platform for rural and regional voices to be heard where it matters most.”
