Upper Lachlan Shire Council proudly welcomed its newest Australian citizens at a Citizenship Ceremony held in Council chambers on Thursday, 18 June, as part of the Ordinary Council Meeting.
The ceremony coincided with Refugee Week, providing an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity that strengthens communities across Australia and to recognise the importance of belonging, inclusion and shared values.
The message for this years refugee week – “one million stories” a sentiment that in the current climate is an important reminder we all tell part of the story.
Mayor Culhane said it was a privilege for Council to play a role in such an important milestone in the lives of new citizens.
“Citizenship ceremonies are among the most rewarding occasions that Council has the opportunity to host. It is incredibly special to play a role in helping someone take their oath and officially become an Australian citizen. It is a moment as Mayor that fills me with pride not only for the individuals and their families involved, but for our entire community.”
Council were pleased to host this ceremony during Refugee Week making the occasion even more significant. Newest citizen Mr Stephen Johnston from Binda who originated from Wales said “It’’s been a long time coming I was a 10-pound Pom, but everyone has always been surprised that I wasn’t born in Australia. It means the comments I received all my life “You must be an Aussie” becomes a true sentiment now, I can say I am Australian.
Ms Therese Becker of Bannister who originated from Germany said “I’ve spent 33 years in Australia. I feel much more Australian than German, it feels right to pledge loyalty to Australia. I also want Australia to win in the soccer world cup.”
The ceremony reminded those in attendance that Australia is built on diversity and that people from many backgrounds contribute to the strength and vibrancy of our communities.
Australian citizenship represents a commitment to the nation and its democratic beliefs and values, while providing individuals with the opportunity to fully participate in Australian life.
