Earlier this year, Southern Tablelands Arts introduced sculptor Carl Valerius to Kathleen Bowerman from the Upper Lachlan Council. Kathleen was tasked with finding an incredible new piece of public art for Crookwell after successfully securing funding from Transport for NSW for an end-of-year street party that included provisions for new public art installations.
The meeting took place at Carl’s studio in Harden, allowing Kathleen to explore the depth and breadth of Carl’s artistic practice. Carl is an established sculptor with a national reputation who is skilled in bronze casting and marble carving—two rare and valuable skill sets.
Carl showcased an exquisite ram’s head sculpture in his studio that immediately captured Kathleen’s imagination. This piece perfectly embodies the heritage of Crookwell and the Upper Lachlan wool industry, reflecting the community’s enduring connection to sheep.
Carl’s ram’s head has been cast in bronze and installed permanently on Goulburn Street, across from the IGA. He also created a bespoke granite stand for the ram, adding elegance to the final installation.
The ram’s head sculpture was officially unveiled on December 13, 2024, during the Crookwell Christmas Street Party, with participation from Carl, Mayor Paul Culhane, and Upper Lachlan Council CEO Alex Waldron.
