Craigs Rd Fire at Curraweela escalated to Emergency Warning status

There is a fire at Craigs Rd, Curraweela which has been escalated from “Watch and Act” to “Emergency Warning” status as at 2.45pm Thursday 16 March, 2023.

Numerous brigades are currently on the scene. Council advises people to stay tuned to the Hazards Near Me app or the Fires Near Me website.

An emergency warning is in place for a fast moving grass fire burning in the area of Curraweela, north of Taralga.

If you are in the Curraweela area between Craigs Road and Jerrong Road, you are in danger. It is now too late to leave. Seek shelter now inside a solid structure such as a house.

3:20PM UPDATE – ROAD CLOSURES

The following roads have been closed due to visibility and proximity to the fire.

  • Taralga Road at Taralga
  • Taralga Oberon Road at Wombeyan Caves Road Intersection
  • Taralga Oberon Road at Abercrombie Bridge

Current Situation

  • There is a fast moving grass fire burning in the area of Curraweela, north of Taralga.
  • The fire has burnt more than 250 hectares and is spreading quickly.
  • Homes in the area of Craigs Road and Taralga Road are being impacted.
  • The fire is burning in an easterly direction towards Jerrong Road.
  • Firefighters and aircraft are working in the area to slow the spread of the fire. The fire is not under control.

What you need to do

  • If you are in the area of Curraweela between Taralga Road and Jerrong Road, including Old Station Creek Road, it is now too late to leave.
  • If the fire impacts, seek shelter in a solid structure such as a house to protect yourself from the heat of the fire.
  • If you are caught in the path of the fire, you may die or be injured.
  • Protect yourself from the heat of the fire. Wear protective clothing and footwear. Cover all bare skin.
  • A safer location may include a well cleared area nearby.
  • If you planned to visit the area, or live in the area but are away from home, it is not safe to return.

If you are threatened by fire

  • If the fire impacts, seek shelter in a solid structure such as a house to protect yourself from the heat of the fire.
  • Bring pets indoors and restrain them, close all doors and windows and turn off air conditioners, keep water running if possible.
  • Shelter in a room on the other side of the building from the approaching fire, and one that has water and a clear exit out of the house.
  • Keep moving away from the fire if possible and if your building catches fire, go to an area within the building which has already burnt.
  • Monitor both inside and outside for small fires and burning embers and turn sprinklers on if you have them.
  • Be careful outdoors after the fire has passed as trees can be unstable and fall.
