Disability access improvements to the Gunning Court House and Gunning Shire Hall commenced on Tuesday 10 June thanks to funding from Create NSW, Veolia and Upper Lachlan Shire Council. The project includes the construction of a disability ramp and stairs at the Court House; and access pathways, disability ramp and car space at the Shire Hall. Council sought heritage advice for the design and works will be carried out in accordance with their recommendations.
The project aims to provide safe, dignified and inclusive access to two of Gunning’s vital community art and cultural venues. Council anticipate these works will reduce disadvantage, by providing access to a greater number of people in our community as well as visitors, to the regular community events held in these buildings.
CEO Alex Waldron said “These changes will improve the inclusiveness of the venue, reduce existing access barriers faced by the mobility impaired in our community and provide a welcoming and dignified front entrance for all”
Extensive consultation was conducted in the Gunning community to identify the much-needed disability access improvements to the venues; improvements are also in line with Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. Council look forward to welcoming more of our community to upcoming events held in these venues.
Construction will take place from 10 June to July 8th, during which access to the Court Room will be limited. Existing bookings at the Gunning Shire Hall will still be able to proceed; however access will be from the side entrance and parking will be at the back or on Copeland Street.
