Four nominees in running for Young Citizen of the Year

A bumper list of nominations will make for an exciting Australia Day Awards in 2023, with plenty of nominations across all categories. In coming weeks, we will list the candidates in each category, starting this week with the Young Citizen of the Year nominees.

Young Citizen of the Year nominees

  • completed the 2022 mentoring program on the Larapinta Trek with the Terry Campese Foundation (110km over 9 days).
  • completed training in 2022 to be a qualified member of NSW Fire and Rescue.
  • was the 2022 Crookwell High School (CHS) captain, sports captain and student rep council member
  • represented CHS in zone cross-country and athletics
  • assistant instructor in the Crookwell and Goulburn Dojo for Goju-Ryu karate
  • previously a member of the Australian Air Force cadets
  • graduated Year 12, completing the Higher School Certificate

Bowen’s referee described him as a visible and approachable leader and role model at Crookwell High School who consistently extends himself physically and mentally on a journey of self-improvement and who always gives a positive and consistent effort of every opportunity.

Eliza Kemp (Crookwell)

  • played in the Under 18s state hockey team and travelled to Cairns to compete
  • played South Coast and Goulburn representative hockey
  • was 2022 Crookwell high School (CHS) Mitchell House Sports Vice Captain and student rep council member
  • elected 2023 CHS School Captain
  • winner 2022 Lions Youth of the Year competition. Represented Crookwell at the next stage.
  • member of the senior school debating team and qualified for NSW semi-finals
  • awarded 2021 CHS Catholic University Award
  • awarded 2021 HSIE Senior HSIE Award

Eliza’s referee described her as a well-rounded young person whom excels cross academic, sporting and leadership realms. She is an accomplished leader, an experienced public speaker and an excellent role model for the students at Crookwell High School.

  • has been elected captain of Crookwell High School (CHS) for 2023 and was school house captain for 2022
  • received the 2021 CHS Year Advisor’s award for Year 10 for effort and attitude.
  • was selected as one of 20 Rural Youth Ambassadors (RYA) to represent rural and remote NSW at a conference in Sydney. From that 20, was selected to represent the RYA to present to Minister of Education at NSW Parliament House during an inquiry into funding for rural schools.
  • sold badges for Legacy Week 2022
  • holds two after school jobs in Crookwell, plays a variety of sports and is a member of a local band that has released songs on Spotify and Apple Music.

Ari’s referee said that Ari’s leadership skills are developing strongly due to his perseverance and commitment to making the most of his opportunities. He is a positive role model and will continue to be as next year’s School Captain. He possesses excellent public speaking skills and is a well-rounded young man.

  • Member of the Trinity Catholic College Sheep Show team
  • Outstanding mentor to younger students
  • Prepared and exhibited Supreme School Exhibit at the 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show
  • Won and placed in many junior judge and junior handler classes and also the Young farmer’s Challenges
  • Jess has also started her own Suffolk stud and had great success at the Royal Easter Show, the NSW State Sheep Show and also local shows.
  • Jess is the junior secretary of the NSW Suffolk Society.

Jessica is a bright, bubbly student who has participated in all things Trinity. She is energetic and approachable and always willing to help, no matter the task.

During Year 12 Jess was a House Captain and fulfilled her responsibility with enthusiasm, commitment and a genuine desire to help others. She managed the pressures of Year 12 and being a student leader with grace.

Jess is truly an outstanding young person, so committed to her pursuits.
