Let’s all enjoy a safe, dog-friendly community

12-02-2025

The Council has recently noticed an increase in reports concerning roaming dogs, aggressive dogs, animal welfare issues, and complaints about barking noise throughout Crookwell.

As dog lovers, we all want our pets to be happy and healthy. To foster a more dog-friendly community, the Council would like to share some helpful tips:

1. Introduce Your Dog to Other Dogs

Socialisation is an essential aspect of dog ownership. It helps your pet acclimate to new sights, sounds, and people in the environment.

2. Be a Good Neighbour

Being considerate of your neighbours means understanding that your dog’s behaviour can affect those around you. Barking is one of the most common complaints received by ULSC. Train your dog to minimize barking. Providing engaging toys and activities can keep them occupied when you’re not home, along with regular exercise, which will also help reduce excessive barking.

3. Keep Dogs on a Leash

Roaming dogs are at risk of being hit by vehicles and may also pose a danger to others if they become scared or agitated. Please remember that fines may apply for dogs found roaming.

4. Ensure Proper Welfare

We all want our dogs to be happy and healthy. Make sure to provide adequate shelter, food, and water for your pets. Cleaning up after your dog is crucial to prevent disease outbreaks.

5. Registration and Microchipping

It is mandatory to register your dog. Pets must be microchipped before they can be registered. Until the registration payment is completed, your pet is not officially registered, and you may face fines, including a fixed penalty notice of $330. Additionally, a late payment fee will apply if registration is not completed within 28 days of the due date. All cats and dogs in NSW must be registered with the NSW Pet Registry by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon transfer, whichever comes first.

If you have any questions about breeding, registration, or other general inquiries, please contact the Council.

With some forward planning and a commitment to responsible pet ownership, we can all enjoy a safe, dog-friendly community.
