Gunning to go pink for breast cancer

27-10-2020

Regardless of whether the skies are blue or grey, Gunning will GO PINK on Friday when the entire town is encouraged to dress up in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Residents (and visitors) will be decorating their offices, businesses, houses, mailboxes (and of course, themselves) to support awareness and research for breast cancer and raise money for the Breast cancer Network Australia.

The idea for the event started when one of the staff at Gunning District Community Health Service (GDCHS) was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It really shook our organisation as she is only very young and a pivotal staff member of Gunning Community Care,” said GDCHS General Manager, Katie Yeo.

“As an organization we really wanted to do something to acknowledge anyone that have also been through a similar situation and raise awareness for “Breast Cancer,” so Rebecca McCamish and myself thought `let’s do a fundraiser and make Gunning go Pink for one day.’ ”

Rebecca walked the streets of Gunning and asked other business owners if they would be interested in donating towards a monster raffle and if they would help make Gunning Pink for one day by decoration their businesses and wearing pink outfits themselves.

“Everyone was very much on board and thought what a wonderful fun day, not to only raise funds for a special cause but to do something fun,” Katie said.

All businesses in the main street of Gunning have now confirmed their donation towards the raffle and have advised they will be decorating their businesses in Pink along with dressing up in pink for this day.  The local Pre School, Primary School and also Gunning Shire Council employees are also wearing pink for the day.

Gunning Community Care have designed special pink shirts for all of our employees to wear on the day which has on the back “Gunning Community Care Supports Breast Cancer Awareness.”

“Rebecca and myself will be walking the streets of Gunning in our pretty pink attire to sell more raffle tickets to locals and any visitors on the day to raise as much funds as we can for Breast Cancer Network Australia,” said Katie.

“This event hasn’t happened before in Gunning and I think it is a breath of fresh air for all businesses to participate considering the trying times we have been through with COVID19 over the past months.

“We also hope by raising awareness on this day it will help bring the Breast screen NSW bus to the Gunning town, because there are quite a few members in the Gunning town and surrounds who require this much needed service!”

To support the event, along with wearing pink, members of the community are invited to buy tickets in the monster raffle, on sale at the GDCHS. For further details, contact (02) 4845 1166.
