In Upper Lachlan Shire, road maintenance and infrastructure development are ongoing processes aimed at maintaining our rural roads and enhancing connectivity. However, as these essential projects unfold, the safety of both workers and other road users remains paramount. Council have noted increased numbers of cars speeding through road works zones, ignoring signs and traffic lights.
Upper Lachlan Shire Council kindly asks drivers to take it easy and reduce their speed when passing through these areas.
Road work zones are where the Shires roads receive the necessary care and upgrades to keep them in good shape. These zones come with their unique quirks, and we’re encouraging drivers to slow down and respect these areas when passing through.
Why slow down:
1. Worker Safety: Road work zones are where dedicated individuals work hard to maintain and enhance our infrastructure. Speeding through these areas not only endangers their well-being but can also disrupt the progress of these important projects.
2. Navigational Challenges: Road work zones come with their share of challenges, including uneven surfaces, narrowed lanes, detours, and temporary signage. These conditions can be tricky to manoeuvre at high speeds, increasing the risk of accidents.
3. Unpredictable Changes: Construction zones can change rapidly, with workers and equipment moving in and out. These unexpected changes require a more attentive and unhurried approach from drivers.
Upper Lachlan Shire Council CEO Alex Waldron commented;
“Drivers who choose to speed in roadwork areas not only risk their safety and the safety of Council staff but may also face consequences such as fines, license suspension, and increased insurance costs. It’s important to understand that these measures are in place to ensure safety and the efficient completion of roadwork.”
What Drivers Can Do:
1. Slow Down: Adhere to posted stop signs, lights and speed limits. Take it down a notch when you enter roadwork zones. Staying within the speed limits keeps everyone safe and ensures smoother traffic flow.
2. Stay Focused: Keep your attention on the road as conditions can change quickly within construction zones. Be prepared for lane closures, detours, and abrupt stops.
3. Follow the Signs: Show respect for temporary signs, cones, and the directions of flaggers. These indicators are vital for your safety and the progress of the roadwork.
4. Exercise Patience: Roadwork may cause some delays, but remember that they are temporary. Impatience can lead to risky driving behaviour.
