Volunteer Week 2025

26-05-2025

As Volunteers Week for 2025 concludes, the Upper Lachlan Shire Council would like to highlight one of its outstanding volunteers.

Debbie Wyatt is a dedicated volunteer at the Crookwell Library and a valued Upper Lachlan Shire community member. A resident of the area for several years, Debbie has generously volunteered at the library for over six months.

Every week, Debbie visits the Crookwell Library to assist with shelving books, managing inventory, and showcasing new book displays.

Debbie has always been passionate about visiting the library. As an avid reader, she has found solace in this calm space, which offers a comfortable and relaxing environment.

Debbie states, “I encourage all community members to volunteer. It is gratifying. You can connect with new people, and the best part of volunteering is giving back to your community—you discover a true sense of fulfilment.”

She adds, “Getting started volunteering at the library was incredibly easy. The library manager, Susan, is always very grateful for the help that the other volunteers and I have provided. I would recommend volunteering with the Upper Lachlan Shire libraries to all community members—there is flexibility with the times and dates that suit you.”

Debbie continued, “Often, I stay after my volunteering is finished just to relax. I truly enjoy connecting with like-minded people, and the library is an amazing place in town to have a quiet read and stay warm, especially during the winter months.”

Regional and remote towns depend heavily on volunteer support. While the Upper Lachlan Shire is fortunate to have outstanding volunteers like Debbie, volunteering rates have steadily declined.

CEO Alex Waldron explained “Volunteering fosters lasting relationships that enrich lives and strengthen communities, enhancing engagement, connection, and a sense of belonging. If you’ve ever considered volunteering, don’t hesitate to contact any of our local not-for-profit groups for more information on opportunities near you.”
