Water and Sewer Update

13-03-2026

During the summer, drinking water production rose to meet increased demand caused by hotter weather and ongoing Council projects. While water treatment plants are managing consumption, staff are closely monitoring declining storage dam and water source levels, and urge all community members to use water responsibly.

Reduced rainfall has led to lower sewer flows and reduced groundwater recharge. Effluent quality and compliance with licence limits are continually monitored, and plant operations are adjusted as needed to reflect seasonal changes.

The Crookwell Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) underwent major repairs in December and January and is now operating at full capacity. In January 2026, a single notifiable incident was reported to the EPA when wastewater results briefly exceeded a licence limit. The issue was promptly addressed, and the plant has since returned to normal operations.

Council staff completed inspections and cleaning of all Sewer Pumping Stations across the Shire. Condition assessments of sewer mains in Taralga, Gunning, and Crookwell were also completed, with rehabilitation of deteriorated lines scheduled for the new financial year. A small percentage of mains contained fat deposits, and Water and Sewer staff are working directly with affected property owners to resolve these issues.
